St. Colman’s Park played host to the first of this year’s four Cork derbies between Cork City. A City team who were three wins from three were frustrated by an on-form Cobh Ramblers side, with the game ending in a 1-1 draw.

City lined up with the same side that started in their 4-1 win over Wexford, as well as their 1-0 win over Bray last week.

Rams boss Fran Rockett made two changes to the side that drew with Finn Harps last time out, with Luka Le Bervet and Oran Crowe coming in to replace Cal Honohan and Kai O’Neill.

It only took two minutes for the first chance of the game, and it went the way of the visitors. Garry Buckley was dispossessed at the back by Darragh Crowley, who poked the ball through for Ruairi Keating. Keating tried to bend the ball into the bottom right corner, but his effort rolled wide of the post.

It was Keating’s strike partner who went close in the tenth minute. Greg Bolger drilled a low corner towards the front post where it found Seani Maguire. He flicked an effort towards the bottom corner, but Corey Chambers was there to push it around the post.

Despite Cobh’s trying, City took the lead from the resulting corner. Cillian Murphy lofted a delivery towards the back post, where a towering Seanie Maguire was on hand to power a header past a helpless Corey Chambers to give City the lead.

That was the last real chance of the first half, as City comfortably withheld the hosts to few glimpses for the remainder of the first forty-five.

Cobh began the second half on fire and were putting City under pressure. This pressure paid off, as the levelled things in the fifty-sixth minute. City headed a corner clear which was headed back in by Oran Crowe. Cian Coleman raced for it alongside Charlie Lyons, with the latter clipping Coleman causing him to collapse to the ground, which was enough for the referee to award a penalty. Rhys Gourdie stepped up and made no mistake to bring his side back level.

Despite City’s sluggishness in the second half, they pushed for a winner and almost found one in the eighty-eighth minute. Conor Drinan floated a cross into the box, which was only cleared as far as Darragh Crowley. He fizzed a ball into the feet of Ruairi Keating, who took a touch and turned to shoot, but his shot was crucially blocked to preserve Cobh’s status.

The visitors kept pushing and once again were close to a winner three minutes into added time. A City cross was headed clear before being lifted back in by Greg Bolger. Cobh failed to clear so it landed at the feet of Hans Mpongo, who took a touch, twisted and unleashed an effort which went flying over the bar from twelve yards out.

City had their final, and best chance in the sixth minute of stoppage time. Conor Drinan sprayed a ball wide right to Cillian Murphy. The youngster got to the byline and skipped by a Cobh defender before coming inside and unleashing a low driven effort towards goal, but Corey Chambers reacted well to keep it out with his right foot.

That was all for the first of four Cork derbies in the 2026 season, as it ended all level in Cobh. City started the first half quite well, getting off to a fairly deserved lead. After that, they seemed quite comfortable with their one goal advantage. Cobh had lots of the ball, but it never really seemed like City were all that threatened by what their opponents were posing to them as it seemed like this would unfold into another cruise control 1-0 win for City. This, however, was not the case. The Rams came out in the second half in far better form than the first, and the opposite can be said for the Leesiders. The visitors looked less assured at the back than before and that, combined with Cobh’s spirited upturn in performance, led to the hosts finding an equaliser. City struggled at times to contain the Rams in the second half, and left their fightback a bit too late. The second half performance to me was probably the worst performance so far, but there’s a long way to go so I wouldn't overreact to anything this early. That being said, if any team deserved a winner it was Cobh.

My Man of the Match goes to Cillian Murphy. I know I just said Cobh were the better team on the night, but I can’t look past the assured performance of Cillian Murphy for this award. In a City team who played quite slow at times, Murphy brought life and skill into the middle of the park, and orchestrated many attacks. As well as that, he provided the sublime cross for the goal.

After losing their one hundred percent start to the season, City will look to get back to winning ways next week at home to Longford. Cobh on the other hand, will look to go one better than this game and get all three points when they travel to Athlone.
